War Memorial Ice Rink Opens Today for Winter Season in NY
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Get ready to lace up your skates!
The WWII Veterans War Memorial Ice Skating Rink at Clove Lakes Park will officially open to the public for the winter season on Friday, Nov. 29.
The rink can accommodate 1,000 skaters, and houses a skating school that offers instruction in figure skating and ice hockey. It also offers a comfortable snack bar for skaters to relax between turns on the ice.
Admission to the rink is $10 for adults, seniors and children 12 years old and younger. It is an additional $5 to rent skates. Those under 18 years old must have a written consent form signed by parent or guardian. Agreement forms are available at rink, and a parent must sign the agreement form in the presence of a rink employee, or parent’s signature must be notarized.
The rink opened in 1995 as a tribute to war veterans throughout history, and is available for adult and youth lessons, as well as parties and events — or just a few hours of family fun. For years, a bubble encased the rink, and the refurbished open-air facility debuted in 2011.
You can go here for vintage photos of the ice skating rink through the years.
The rink will be open on Fridays, from 4 to 11 p.m; Saturdays, from noon to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 to 10 p.m.; and Sundays, from noon to 7 p.m.
It will also be open weekdays during the winter recess from Dec. 26 through Dec. 30 from noon to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 to 10 p.m.
And the facility will be open from noon to 4:30 p.m. on the following holidays: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20, and mid-winter recess from Feb. 17-20. On Feb. 21, the rink will be open from noon to 11 p.m.
