If you listen to Scott Hamilton talk about kids and their smartphones, tablets, computer screens and television habits these days, you may mistake him for one of those “Get off my lawn!” guys.

The former Olympic gold medalist figure skater and four-time U.S. and world champion put it bluntly in a phone interview ahead of his appearance at the annual FCA South Central Missouri Christian Athlete and Coach of the Year Banquet.

“It’s hard to look up when you’re looking into a device all the time,” he said of the challenges of getting young people to work on their faith.

But listen a little longer, and you will see he sees the never-ending connection to technology these days as an opportunity, not an obstacle.

“This gives me hope, because everything is so accessible,” he continued. “Everything is instant gratification, everything is right there in the palm of our hands, and it has never been like that before.”
