Famed Olympic Figure Skater Host Clinic
RHINELANDER – A world renowned Olympian came to Rhinelander to share skills she’s learned over decades of hard work.
The Rhinelander Figure Skating Club hosted an event with three-time World silver medalist Surya Bonaly on Saturday. Bonaly says she’s never been to the Northwoods before, but was excited to come teach the kids.
“I like to come here to just kind of chill, relax, and help the new generation. Hopefully one day we’ll see some kids from Wisconsin going to nationals level,” said Bonaly.
Bonaly says she’s at a point in her life where she wants to share her figure skating knowledge with the world. Doing this clinic allowed her to instruct and mentor local talent on a more personal level.
“I’ve been through all those years practicing, learning, and now I think it’s time to give back and help anyone who wants, is willing to be able to learn, and want to skate, said Bonaly. “Maybe become a performer in shows, maybe Disney on Ice.”
Amy Phillips drove all the way from Green Bay to make sure her daughter attended this clinic.
“For us to come to the clinic was an incredible opportunity to skate with two amazing coaches, and one being Surya, a former Olympian and amazing skater professionally,” said Phillips.
Marty Jones serves as President of the Rhinelander Figure Skating Club. He says they hope to continue to host these types of events for girls in the Northwoods.
“We’ve got kids from Wausau and Tomahawk, so we bring them in from all over. It keeps kids active,” said Jones. “It gets good coaching for the kids and these higher lever coaches are just real inspirational.”
The Rhinelander Figure Skating Club will host their Christmas show this coming Friday at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
